She’s Eclectic – How To Create A Home That’s Uniquely You
You’d be forgiven for thinking that home decor is all about the minimalism, and sometimes it is. Nothing boosts my concentration more than a tidy home office, with clean lines and a few statement accessories. But close the door to the office, and leave the stark, minimalistic look for work only, because let me tell you, I’ve begun to really embrace the eclectic in my home, and it’s making a real difference to how I feel about the space I have. Creating a home that is uniquely you is definitely a happiness booster, so let me show you how.
What IS eclectic decor?
At its core, eclectic decor is a style that defies most of the rules I’ve previously lived by, and it’s almost impossible to fully define it. It’s that quirky lamp you picked up from a second hand shop, an old watering can filled with flowers on the window ledge, or a table made from driftwood in your otherwise soft, modern living room. Mixing styles from different eras, using colours that catch the eye and textures you want to reach out and touch is all part of creating a unique home that appeals to all the things you like.
But that doesn’t mean just throwing a bunch of things you like in a room. There’s a very big difference between clutter and carefully chosen pieces. And while, like I said, there are no hard and fast rules surrounding eclectic decor, there are some key elements to keep in mind.
Mixing up your styles
Some great ideas for an eclectic home can include pairing the old and the new. Imagine a vintage Armchair with an uber-modern coffee table, for example. You can also mix and match themes, like I have. My beautiful Scandinavian sideboard now stands proudly next to my bright Moroccan rug, and let me tell you it looks fantastic.
Choosing colours carefully.
There’s nothing better than a bit of colour, especially during the winter month. Eclectic decor is all about the bold and the vibrant. Colourful mismatched cushions, indifferent shapes and sizes, or a vibrant accent wall can lift a room relatively quickly and cheaply.
Using texture
This is one of the most simple ways to add another element to your room. Imagine a vintage leather sofa, with a soft velvet throw and textured cushions. Not only will it look super inviting to sit on, but you may find yourself stroking the cushions and curling up beneath the throw. Believe me I’ve done this and it’s a great stress reliever.
Making a statement
Whether you adore a quirky piece of artwork, or a vintage mirror, find space in your heart and your room for a statement piece. The quirkier the better, and if it means something to you, even better.
Getting personal
This leads on to my final point. If you really want to make a house your own, you need items that you connect with. Think about ways to showcase items you’ve collected from a walk on the beach, for example or, get hold of some unique frames (charity shops are a great place for these) and display some family photos. Upcycling your own furniture if you are that way inclined, can be a great idea. Or, you can go about making your own cushions or artwork to really bring your own style into the mix.
Hopefully now you have a little inspiration to start mixing it up with your decor and create your own eclectic home. Why not give it a try and let me know how you get on? And, more importantly, how it makes you feel to have a house that is completely yours.
