Garden Room or Summerhouse? Which Is Right for Your Garden?

There are plenty of reasons that people choose to build a structure in their garden. However, when deciding between a garden room and a summerhouse, the decision isn’t always a straightforward one. Both can add functionality, charm and value to your property, but both serve very different lifestyles and purposes. Having a good understanding of the distinctions between the two can help choose the structure that is best suited to your needs.

What is a garden room?

To put it simply, a garden room is an extension of your living space. It is a fully insulated, often year-round building that is designed for comfort. Essentially it is an extra room that sits at the end of your garden. Garden rooms usually feature double glazing, proper insulation, electricity and in some cases plumbing. They are the ideal choice for gyms, home offices, studios, or cosy retreats. You can use them in every season. Because they are built to higher specification, they can feel more like part of the home than an outdoor “shed.”

What is a summerhouse?

On the other hand, a summerhouse is a lighter, more traditional structure. They are usually made from timber with large windows, or patio style doors. Plus, they have a more relaxed design. As the name would imply they are intended for seasonal use, namely for use in the summer when the weather is warmer. Summerhouses are not typically insulated, and whilst it is possible for them to be fitted with electrics, they are usually simpler and more affordable. They are a great place to escape to for reading, relaxing, entertaining, or simply enjoying the garden from a sheltered spot. Think of them as something of a charming escape rather than a functional living space.

So, which is right for you? It really all depends on how you want to use it.

An everyday space

If you are looking for a practical, everyday space, then a garden room is the clear winner. Insulation and durability make it possible for you to work, exercise, or unwind comfortably all year long. For those working from home or hybrid working, a garden room can offer that all important separation and quiet that can be hard to achieve in the family home. They also tend to add more value to your property too. This is because they are seen as a genuine additional room.

The garden lifestyle

If you are looking to improve your garden lifestyle then a summerhouse may be the better fit. Creating a focal point, offering shelter on warm days, and providing you with a peaceful retreat without the cost or commitment of a fully insulated build, a summerhouse is the perfect choice. A well placed summerhouse can also make your garden feel larger and more inviting. This, in turn, will encourage you to spend more time outdoors.

Things to consider

Of course, how you will use your space isn’t the only consideration. Budget and garden size also play a role. Garden rooms require a higher investment and more space, while summerhouses come in a wide range of sizes and to a variety of budgets. Whilst in many cases neither of them need planning permission, it is always a good idea to check because local regulations vary.

Ultimately, the right choice is the one that aligns with how you want to live. Whether you crave a functional extension of your home or a tranquil garden hideaway, the right structure can transform your outdoor space into something truly special.
