How Decor Choices Impact Mood and Productivity

It is true that everyone wants their home to be stunning. However, it is just as important that the décor in your home has a positive impact on your mood and productivity.

Interior design and mental health are intertwined more than you might realise. Consequently, the décor choices that you make can not only impact your mood but also your productivity.

The layout

How you lay out a room matters. When pieces of furniture block your ability to move easily from one room to another, this can be frustrating. It might be that your room isn’t very well laid out, that you have too much furniture or just a bit too much clutter. Minimising what you have in a room can really help your mood. Clutter can make it seem like a room is messy and this can have a negative impact. Therefore, you need to look for clever storage solutions and move things around a bit.

Colour palettes

Warm colour palettes that incorporate yellow, red, and orange can evoke a sense of warmth and sunshine. However, they can also overstimulate the brain, making it difficult to relax. The right warm shades can evoke just enough of a mood enhancing environment without being too much so consider your shades. Yellow, for example, is known to radiate creativity and energy, and used in moderation can be great in a room that need productivity such as an office.

Cooler colour palettes on the other hand, for example those that incorporate greens or teal can be soothing. They can offer a sense of harmony and balance to a room. Green is thought to be a calm and relaxing colour, hence the term “grren room” used as a space for actors to destress before going on stage. Blue falls into the same category. It is a natural colour synonymous with nature. However, it needs to be used correctly otherwise it can appear sad and rather gloomy.

Neutral and monochrome colour schemes can be quite safe. Plus, colours like beige and brown also have a connection to nature, which helps create a calm environment. Again, these colours should be used carefully and usually sparingly so that they don’t feel too flat.

Other things to consider

It is important not to overlook lighting in your décor choices. This can also have an impact on your mood. Low level ligthing can seem snug and cosy however it is just as important to rely on natural light sources in your home. With 1 in 3 people struggling with Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) as a result of a lack of sunlight, make sure that you are encouraging natural light into your rooms to help prompte a positive mood.

Plants are a great mood lifter as well. You can incorporate some natural elements in your rooms as well. They not only help to improve moos but also increase oxygen levels.

One final thing to incorporate into your rooms are a few personal decorative touches. Items such as ornaments and photographs will make your rooms feel more like somewhere comfortable. Consequently, this can help boost productivity.

Your home is a blank canvas where you can make your mark, so make sure that you create a positive inviting environment you want to spend time in.
