Shaker, Country or Something Else – What style kitchen should you consider?

When it comes to choosing a new kitchen, there are so many styles out there that it can seem somewhat overwhelming. This is undoubtedly one of the biggest purchases that you will ever make for your home. You want something that will stand the test of time and still look great. So, it is important to consider all your options. Otherwise, you could end up with a rather costly mistake.  

The kitchen is after all the hub of most homes. It’s a place to cook, eat and sometimes even entertain if you have plenty of space. So, don’t feel that you need to rush your decisions. Gone are the days when matching the style of your kitchen to your home was the way forward. Take your time and find something you love.

Shaker Style

This style of kitchen has its roots in simplicity and functionality without the need for too many embellishments or overly decorative features. It takes its name from the 18^th-century religious movement in the US. Modern Shaker style has come on a little. And, while the basics have remained the same, there is a greater variety of colour and finishing touches involved. A Shaker kitchen is predominately wood, but not enough to tip it over into the country kitchen style, a freestanding unit is one key element. This is the perfect style for anyone who likes cool colours, clean lines and a simple style. It can easily be added to with a few simple accessories to really set it off. 

Country Style

Country kitchens have become increasingly popular over the years, and this trend really doesn’t show any signs of slowing down. Wood obviously plays a huge part in helping you to achieve this. Where it differs from the Shaker style is that it is a bit more rustic and less restrained. This is a style with larger more open spaces, deep kitchen sinks and wooden cabinets with wood and glass detailing on the doors. A country kitchen that looks more lived in and as such clutter (organised, of course) is something that you will find. Think counter tops with storage jars and decorative jugs and bowls playing an integral part of the design. 

Florals may also feature heavily in a country kitchen. Drapes, table clothes and of course glorious vases of flowers really help set the scene.

A World of Styles

While Shaker and Country are both very popular styles of kitchen, there are plenty of other looks you could go for. Many homes, especially those more modern ones with smaller kitchens favour the clean lines and sleek look of a thoroughly modern kitchen with a monochrome colour scheme. Clutter is at a minimum and storage is used to the max in order to help achieve this look. 

Whatever style you do choose, consider how you use your kitchen and how you want it to work for you. Functionality and style should work hand in hand when you find the right kitchen for your home.
