Top Tip – Different Thickness Tiles

As a professional tiler (or even a keen DIYer) you may, during one of your home improvement projects, have come across the problem of trying to install border tiles that were thinner than the surrounding, large porcelain tiles. This can be a particular problem with mosaic borders or feature areas because due to the small size of mosaic tiles they are often thinner than standard porcelain tiles. But this problem needn’t be a problem in your new home improvement projects anymore with a tile backerboard.

These strong rigid boards have a high-density polystyrene core with a polymer modified, glass fibre reinforced cement coating on both sides. The 4mm and 6mm boards can be cut to the width of your border or feature area and the mosaic tiles fixed directly to the board, which is suitable for thin or thick-bed tile adhesive. Once the tile adhesive is dry the board is fixed to the wall or substrate and your feature tiles will lie perfectly flat and at the same level as the surrounding tiles.

Because a tile backer board is moisture and rot proof it is suitable for exterior use as well as in bathrooms, showers and wetrooms. It can also be used on floors where there will be underfloor heating because it has a high thermal insulation. Best of all it makes tiling quicker and easier which will save on costs.

Now there can be no excuse for not creating an individual and creative tiling design feature.
